Hennigan ads
sound off vs. mayor By Kevin
Rothstein Friday, October 14, 2005
Tapping into her newly
flush campaign account, mayoral challenger Maura Hennigan took her
campaign to the airwaves yesterday with radio ads that blast incumbent
Mayor Thomas
M. Menino for ducking her call for more debates.
``We're
going to run a very aggressive campaign, we're going to get our message
out and it's very sad Tom Menino is afraid to defend his record,''
Hennigan told the Herald.
The
radio ads slam Menino for the city's rising homicide rate, falling school
test scores, rising taxes and pot-holed streets.
Each
issue is punctuated by a sound - crime, by a police siren, pot holes by an
angry driver and so on. For Menino's nonresponse to these charges, the ads
substitute the sound of chirping crickets.
A
Menino campaign spokeswoman declined to comment on the ad campaign.
The
$20,700 ad buy bought time on two AM and two FM stations. More stations
will air the ads next week.
The ad
buy is one of several moves that tap into the $425,000 Hennigan pumped
into her campaign account from the loan taken on her Jamaica Plain home.
She has also hired a new press secretary, Melissa Threadgill, and produced
and mailed a glossy pamphlet to 45,000 Boston homes.
With
less than four weeks to go until the Nov. 8 election, Hennigan is also
planning television ads. Menino's $1 million war chest gives him ample
opportunity to respond.
``I'm
trying to show we want to do the job, show we have a command of the
issues, which is obviously why he doesn't want to discuss issues, doesn't
want a real debate, ``Hennigan said. |
